€1m boost for Hwange conservation
The Dutch Postcode Lottery has awarded a €1 million grant to the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority to strengthen habitat and wildlife protection in and around Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe. The funding will support wildlife rescue, expand ranger capacity and secure key migration routes across the 14,600 square kilometre park, home to more than 45,000 African savannah elephants and a cornerstone of Zimbabwe’s wildlife tourism.
Building on IFAW’s Room to Roam partnership with ZimParks since 2019, the investment targets anti‑poaching, human – wildlife conflict mitigation and corridor connectivity within the Hwange – Matetsi – Zambezi landscape, part of the Kavango – Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area. Recent collaborative work has included rehabilitating water pans, deploying solar‑powered pumps and community programmes that create alternative livelihoods – measures expected to bolster ecosystem resilience and underpin sustainable tourism.
