The gateway to South Luangwa National Park, Mfuwe International Airport, will remain operational throughout 2024 after initial plans to close the runway for a three month period this summer.

The airport, which provides crucial access to South Luangwa National Park and the Luangwa Valley’s wildlife attractions, will undergo vital upgrades and developments while remaining fully operational during Zambia’s peak tourism season. Commencing on 13th June 2024, the development project will incorporate several key infrastructure improvements over a 90-day period.

Zambia Tourism Agency (ZTA), Board Chairman Daan Brink said “We’re extremely pleased that the Zambia Airports Corporation Limited has worked with the government to minimise disruption, and reverse their decision to close Mfuwe International airport this summer. It’s extremely important that the airport remains operational during the peak season, so we can continue to showcase the extraordinary game viewing available in South Luangwa and the Luangwa Valley in the summer months.”

Mfuwe International Airport can be reached in one hour and ten minutes via a direct flight from Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Zambia’s capital, Lusaka. The upgrade will greatly enhance the infrastructure of the airport, ensuring Zambia's tourism sector can continue to grow.
