Seolo Africa Community Projects

Website http://seoloafrica.co.za/how-we-give-back/

At Seolo Africa we believe that where there is conservation, there are communities that must reap and see the benefits that conservation brings to them and their families beyond employment opportunities. Experiencing tangible value highlights the importance of conservation to local communities and they automatically become not only proponents, but also protectors, of these precious natural resources.

Some of our community projects include:

• Local projects in both Zimbabwe and South Africa that provides transfers between the airport and the lodge.

• A community contract providing staff transport to and from work.

• Growth and upskilling of our own staff, which has seen amongst others a waitress and a maintenance man realise their dreams of becoming guides – and excellent ones at that! Both are now doing advanced studies in their field.

• Upskilling the ladies at Masoyi Home Based Care, South Africa, with both training and industrial sewing equipment so that they can fundraise (by selling what they make) and they can pass these skills on to children in aftercare who would otherwise be playing in the streets after school.

• Tertiary education, both through the support of the Sumbandila Scholarship Fund in both South Africa and Zimbabwe, and the Creseldah Education Trust in South Africa.

• Support for vulnerable households (many of which are headed by children), to ensure that their basic needs are met.

• Purchasing goods like soaps, gas, firewood and gravel from local businesses.

• Procuring services such as canvas stitching, thatching, carpentry and sewing from local communities, so that their businesses (and families) can benefit directly from our existence.

In South Africa we are also currently working on a large, long-term project to try and link local farmers with lodges, using cold storage transport, so that lodges can buy fresh produce directly from the farmers. This has had to go back to grass roots level to work with farmers on crop rotation etc, but is ongoing.

We feel that it is important for lodges to go beyond simply buying curios and trying to sell them on to guests which is limiting because travellers very often have little packing space, or cannot transport wooden carvings etc. because of airline regulations.

Assisting businesses to develop through grants, interest free loans and training opportunities, as well as contracting with them to purchase their services and consumable products used in the lodges, provides a sustainable source of income for communities bordering on conservation areas. It also goes a long way toward changing the perception of nature reserves being frivolous play grounds for the wealthy to a valuable source of income and growth for current and future generations.
