Overview

A rustic, traditional camp of 8 canvas-walled units beneath cooling thatch, Camp Hwange overlooks one of the natural waterholes that make this part of Hwange National Park special.

Founded in 2010 by a well-known professional guide, Camp Hwange’s location is strategic. This private concession in the central part of Hwange lies between the rugged mopane woodlands to the north and the sandy soil teak forests to the south-west; it’s location here on this open savannah ecotone means that game viewing is as diverse as its habitat types.

Aside from fantastic game viewing, especially in the drier months from April through to November, Camp Hwange offers an excellent guided experience with a strong emphasis on walking and tracking.

Lesedi Schools & Clinic

Website http://lesedizim.org/

Lesedi Schools & Clinic provides quality education and health services to communities in a rural area called Ntabayengwe not far from Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. The project is funded by the Ngoko Charitable Trust, a registered UK-based charity (charity no. 1163965).

Despite the relative proximity to Victoria Falls, the daily existence of the communities surrounding Lesedi could be from another world. The people in this area are often poorly educated with very limited opportunities for improving their lives. Most families survive through subsistence farming and cattle herding. Human-wildlife conflict is rife and cattle are often taken by lions and crops ravaged by elephants.

Lesedi – meaning ‘light’ – started out life in 2014 as a very humble pre-school … a single outdoor shelter that served as a pre-school for a handful of children. Today, Lesedi comprises a pre-school, a primary school and a growing secondary school. Such is the standard of facilities and education that Lesedi now caters to hundreds of children from the surrounding communities. Virtually all the learners are supported by a child sponsorship programme run by the charity. All students enjoy a nutritious lunch each day, whilst the primary children also receive porridge for breakfast.

Health is also a focus. Lesedi Clinic opened in 2020 and is an exemplary rural health facility that boasts two resident nurses, weekly visits by a fully qualified doctor, maternity facilities, inpatient wards and more. In addition to serving the wider communities, the clinic provides a vital health resource for the Lesedi learners. Some of the children have long-term health conditions, and the clinic ensures a consistent supply of medication and regular monitoring.
