AirKenya is delighted to have a role in the work of The Samburu Project to transform the lives of women and girls in this remote region of Kenya by providing clean sources of water. To date, they have drilled 118 wells which supply water to over 100,000 people. The impact on health and women’s empowerment is reflected in the fact that education, especially for girls, has doubled in these communities. Women are now setting up small businesses and getting involved in small-scale commercial farming. Infant deaths caused by waterborne diseases have been eradicated. In December 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, The Samburu Project, in collaboration with PadMad Kenya, conducted hygiene and reproductive health workshop in Samburu. Tourism Ambassador for Kenya and world marathon record holder, Eliud Kipchoge, was on hand to offer his support and also shine a spotlight on the Samburu region as a tourism location. Every year Airkenya in partnership with the Wells Project contributes about USD10,000 towards the program expense in transportation for staff and board members.
Airkenya has been part of this school’s journey for almost a decade during which it has been transformed from basic tin-panel structures to a modern eight-classroom facility. We recognised that education is the springboard for community development in the Maasai Mara, one of our flagship destinations. The school now has a fully stocked library an administrative block, teachers’ quarters, a borehole that supplies clean water and a solar power system. Next on the list will be more classrooms, a kitchen and dormitories for pupils to allow them to stay at school rather than having long and potentially dangerous walks past wild animals. This will allow the school to grow to 300 pupils. During a recent visit to Emarti, AirKenya general manager, Capt. Dino Bisleti thanked our many passengers who have donated to the project and Wildlife Safari Ltd. for library supplies. The total cost of the long-term project will be around USD 1.5 million.
Taekwondo Waithaka Club was founded in 1998 by Master George Mureu to provide children and young adults in this deprived community of Nairobi with a facility where they would learn discipline and self-reliance. George was the club’s sole financier and when he died unexpectedly the club struggled to survive relying on the support of friends and parents. The club lost a coach, several pupils left and a lack of sponsorship meant it had difficulty participating in local competitions. In 2019 it was on the brink of collapse when Airkenya stepped in to sponsor their first championship competition in Mombasa and another in Embakasi, Nairobi. We also supplied the club with essential floor mat equipment. As a result Taekwondo Waithaka Club students recently sat for their first-ever grading exam since the club’s inception. A proud day for everyone.
