Send a Cow

For several years Africa Exclusive has supported the work of Aid Agency Send a Cow. Now, for our 20th anniversary we have committed to provide £30,000 to fund two urgently needed village development projects in Western Kenya. We’d like to ask you to help us. The villages are Jinuii and Echengo Temakho in the desperately poor Busia area where poor farming methods and overuse of land make it unproductive. Many families can only earn 40 pence a day and 66% are below the poverty line. Add in poor health and the effect of AIDS, and you have a desperate situation. The good news is – it’s a situation that Send a Cow can improve with this carefully planned project. With our help and yours. Their local farming experts will work closely with 42 families (301 people)in the following ways · Training in new sustainable farming methods including composting, keyhole vegetable gardens, natural pesticides, use of improved seeds and production of animal forage · The provision of 30 in calf dairy heifers with training in how to look after them. The calves will be passed on to other families. · Training in conservation including use of fuel efficient stoves, water harvesting and prevention of soil erosion. · Send a Cow will work sensitively with the families to change mindsets and increase mutual respect between men and women and encourage families to work together. They will try and relieve problems caused by AIDS and halt its spread. All the above will produce far higher income for families improving their diet, accommodation and health and allowing children to attend school. These changes will be long lasting and are based on training people to make better use of their land and resources. Most of the money goes on training and support, and the one off purchase of the heifers. It is a condition of the project that the families share what they learn and pass on the benefits to their neighbours. They estimate that by the time the project ends in late 2013 a total of 400 families of several thousand people will benefit significantly. By 2013 we expect that the improved village economy will have an uplifting effect on surrounding villages.
