A bush camp in the heart of an exceptional wildlife
Iharana Bush Camp is the most unusual bush camp of Madagascar: the canvas tents have been replaced by beautiful natural structures that are totally integrated inside the landscape. The rooms are actually cottages or « cabanas ». The organic architecture is inspired by traditional Malagasy « architecture »: ochre and laterite walls made of earth, roofs made of satrana, (a sort of palm tree locally and traditionally used for house building), and the partitions are all made in vegetal materials such as wood, roots, lianas and granite. The mix of these materials gives a very original character to the camp, so that it is in total harmony with its environment. Each cottage is equipped with private bathroom and toilets (cold water). A mezzanine welcomes the sleeping area where we have a nice bed made of round wood and covered with a mosquito net. The mezzanine is open to one of the sides of the bungalow, which allows for admiring starry skies at night.
A large terrace overviewing the lake has already become the favourite place for those who enjoy sunsets: every afternoon at the end of the day, the cliffs of the Tsingy massif glow of fairy colors; birds gather and sometimes, some crowned lemurs start their twilight concert. The kitchen is built in traditional material as well and is also open on the dining area ; at the same time intimate and friendly, the restaurant is an important living area of the bush camp. A healthy and exsquisite cuisine that is based on natural ressources is served. It is well made special by its quality and the freshness of the products used, as well as its simplicity enhanced by a subtle local spices assay.
The Spirit of Iharana Bush Camp
The bush camp is located on the edge of a lake, facing the Tsingy massif, just a few steps from Mahavavy River. The natural site is of a stunning beauty. One is in the real wild nature here: no TV, no phone, no air conditioning, but a young smiling and available team of Malagasy people. Most of them come from the area. They will remain at your entire disposal to make you take full advantage of this peace or to make you discover the surroundings of the camp (discover the village life of people, Mahavavy River, walking into and around the massif, visit caves, and Antankarana graves. Iharana Bush Camp offers
· an ideal situation for excursions to and from Ankarana national park (entrance at Mahamasina, 1h drive, southern entrance at Ambatoarana at 1h15 driver)
· the possibility of a real immersion in the heart of the Malagasy bush
· the charm and the authenticity with a minimal impact on the environment
We save water; we use solar energy for lights, and try to manage our waste the best possible way. We give priority to local people when hiring people to work. We try to encourage the discovery and the understanding of local culture: some activities are suggested to allow our guests to meet the local communities. In everyday life, we encourage an attitude of humility, of simplicity and discretion, which are the minimum requirements that will give way to exchanges; respect customs and traditions of the people that welcomes us in their area of living. One euro per night is given as funds to the local communities (to finance micro projects, funds for schools and clinics, management of natural sites…)
We don’t forget your comfort: after a wonderful day of discovery, a generous dinner is waiting for you on the big outside terrace where you will be enjoying friendly moments of farniente while enjoying citronella drinks or rhum arrangé.
