&BEYOND Launches Innovative Nutrition Programme for Staff

Luxury safari group &Beyond has launched an innovative initiative called Food for Life to encourage healthy eating among staff members and the communities surrounding the group’s 31 African lodges and camps. The programme is also aimed at upskilling participants in nutritious food preparation.

In terms of the competition’s format, staff will be divided into groups and will be required to work with the resident head chef, canteen chef and the Positive Health * champion at their lodge to devise a healthy recipe and prepare the meal, which can be either a breakfast, lunch or dinner option. Participating teams will be required to develop, test and present their recipes within specified budgets.

The competition also features annual regional cook-offs during which entries will be evaluated by a panel of food and nutrition judges. The best recipes will be included in a Positive Health cookbook and will be incorporated into healthier menus in staff canteens.

In addition, the winning Food for Life team will receive R4 000 (approximately US$ 600) to be used to upgrade the staff canteen at their lodge and the head chef and canteen chef in the team will each receive R1 000 (approximately US$150).

* Positive Health was started by &Beyond in 2003 to manage and prevent the spread of HIV/Aids among staff members and in surrounding communities, and to encourage all staff to live healthier, positive lives. The programme focuses on knowledge, nutrition, life support and the motivation to live.
